1972 Topps #128 Eddie Watt

About Eddie Watt
Eddie Watt broke his hand in midsummer 1971 tagging Mickey Rivers at home plate and missed a month, yet still led Baltimore relievers with 11 saves and posted a 1.82 ERA in 35 games. He saved Game 1 of the ALCS against Oakland by shutting out the A's over the last two innings, then took the loss in Game 4 of the World Series in Pittsburgh. His 1972 Topps #128, from the first series, pictures him as an Oriole.
Eddie Watt was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent parts of ten seasons in the majors, mostly in the Baltimore Orioles bullpen from 1966 to 1973. An Iowan out of Iowa State Teachers College, he signed with Baltimore in 1961 and worked his way up through Appleton, Aberdeen, Elmira and Rochester, throwing two no-hitters at Elmira in 1965. Used almost exclusively as a reliever after his rookie year, he led the Orioles pitching staff in appearances four straight seasons and helped Baltimore to four pennants and two World Series titles. He posted a 38-36 career record with 80 saves and a 2.91 ERA over 411 games, going 37-34 with 74 saves as an Oriole. He finished his playing career with the Phillies and Cubs and then worked as a minor league manager and pitching coach, including several seasons in the Atlanta Braves system.
