About Charlie Fox
After the division title, San Francisco slid to 69-86 and fifth place in the National League West in 1972, as a string of poor trades took the club out of contention. Fox's manager card, #129, comes from the first series and carries the Giants.
Charlie Fox managed the San Francisco Giants from May 1970 to June 1974 and led them to the 1971 National League West title, a year The Sporting News named him Manager of the Year. As a player he caught three games for the 1942 New York Giants and went 3-for-7, then spent three years in the Navy. The rest of his playing career was in Giants farm clubs, where he became a player-manager and helped develop a young Willie McCovey. He ran the Class C St. Cloud Rox for eight years, scouted from 1957 to 1963, managed Tacoma in 1964 and joined Herman Franks's San Francisco staff as a coach in 1965. His Giants teams went 348-327. Later he served as Montreal's emergency manager in 1976 and general manager through 1978, took over the Chicago Cubs for the last 39 games of 1983, and coached the 1989 Yankees under Dallas Green. He died in Stanford, California, at 82.
