1972 Topps #147 Dave Kingman

About Dave Kingman
Kingman reached the majors on July 30, 1971, pinch running for Willie McCovey, and homered with a grand slam in his next game. He finished with 6 home runs and 24 RBI in 41 games and went 1-for-9 as the Giants lost the NLCS to Pittsburgh in four games. Topps issued his rookie card at #147, in the second series of 1972, showing him with the Giants.
Dave Kingman was a 6-foot-6 right-handed slugger who played outfield, first base, third base and designated hitter for the Giants, Mets, Padres, Angels, Yankees, Cubs and Athletics from 1971 to 1986, and retired with 442 home runs and 1,210 RBI. He led the National League in home runs twice, with 48 for the Cubs in 1979 and 37 for the Mets in 1982, and was a three-time All-Star. His .204 average in 1982 is the lowest for any season's home run leader. He struck out 1,816 times, fourth on the career list when he retired. He averaged a home run every 15.11 at bats, and one of his Wrigley Field shots was estimated at 550 feet. An all-America at USC under Rod Dedeaux, he helped the Trojans win the 1970 College World Series and was the first pick of that year's secondary-phase draft by San Francisco. In 1984 he was the American League Comeback Player of the Year with 35 home runs and 118 RBI for Oakland, and his 35 homers in 1986 set a record for a player's final season. He hit 16 grand slams, tied with Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth when he retired. In 1992, his first year of eligibility, he appeared on three Hall of Fame ballots, which ended his time on the writers' ballot.
