About Dick Dietz In Action

Dietz caught 135 games for the 1971 Giants and hit 19 home runs with 72 RBI. San Francisco held off the Dodgers by one game for the National League West title, after leading by nine on August 1. He had one hit in 15 at-bats in the playoff loss to Pittsburgh. His 1972 Topps cards are #295 and the In Action card #296, both in the third series.

Richard Allen Dietz was a catcher who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors, 1966 to 1973, mostly with the San Francisco Giants. Signed as an amateur free agent out of South Carolina before the 1960 season, he broke in with the Giants in June 1966 and worked his way from backup duty behind Tom Haller into the regular catching job by 1970. That year he set career highs across the board, batting .300 with 22 home runs and 107 runs batted in, and he made the National League All-Star team, leading off the ninth inning of that year's game with a home run off Catfish Hunter that helped spark a rally that tied it. He caught every game down the stretch of the 1971 division race. He closed out his career with the Dodgers in 1972 and the Braves in 1973. He retired with a .261 career average and later managed in the minor leagues.
