About this card

The story on this card
Arnold reached the Giants on September 7, 1971 and hit his first home run in his third big-league at-bat, off future Hall of Famer Phil Niekro on September 10. He appeared in 51 games in 1972, 17 of them at third base. Card #232, from the second series, is his rookie card, the Giants Rookie Stars card he shares with Jim Barr and Dave Rader, who are also on their own rookie cards. Chris Arnold was a utility infielder and pinch hitter for the San Francisco Giants from 1971 to 1976, hitting .237 with four home runs in 273 games, and later spent three seasons with the Kintetsu Buffaloes in Japan.
Barr moved into the Giants rotation in mid-1972 and finished 8-10 with a 2.87 ERA in 44 games. On August 23 he retired the last 21 Pirates he faced, and on August 29 he retired the first 20 Cardinals before Bernie Carbo doubled in the seventh. Topps #232, a second-series Rookie Stars card, groups him with Giants teammates Chris Arnold and Dave Rader and is a rookie card for all three men. Jim Barr was a Giants right-hander who retired 41 straight batters over two starts in August 1972, a major-league record at the time, won ten or more games five years running from 1973 to 1977, and also pitched for the Angels.
Manager Charlie Fox told Rader he had the Giants' catching job in mid-March 1972, the same day his wife gave birth to a son. He played 133 games, hitting .259 with six home runs, the first off Tom Seaver. His #232 is a second-series Rookie Stars card shared with Chris Arnold and Jim Barr, all three printed with San Francisco, and the rookie card for each of them. Dave Rader caught for the Giants from 1972 to 1976, finishing second in the 1972 NL Rookie of the Year voting. He later played for the Cardinals, Cubs, Phillies and Red Sox, retiring with a .257 average in 846 games.
