1972 Topps #140 Pat Dobson

About Pat Dobson
Pat Dobson's 2.65 ERA in 1972 was lower than in his 20-win season, yet he went 16-18 and tied Mel Stottlemyre for the American League lead in losses. He started 36 games and worked 268 1/3 innings. On December 1, 1972, Baltimore sent him to Atlanta with Davey Johnson, Johnny Oates and Roric Harrison for Earl Williams and Taylor Duncan. His Orioles card is #140, a second-series issue.
Pat Dobson was a right-handed pitcher who spent eleven seasons in the majors with Detroit, San Diego, Baltimore, Atlanta, the New York Yankees and Cleveland. He broke in with the Tigers in 1967 after years in the minors and winter ball, working mostly in relief, including Detroit's 1968 championship season, when he appeared in the World Series against St. Louis. Traded to San Diego, he became a full-time starter for the first time in 1970. A trade to Baltimore paid off immediately: in 1971 Dobson won twenty games as one of four Orioles pitchers to reach that mark, a feat matched only once before in major league history, and he made the All-Star team the following season. With the Yankees he won nineteen games in 1974. He finished his career with 122 wins and 1,301 strikeouts. Over 414 games he posted a 3.54 ERA. After his playing days he was a pitching coach for the Brewers, Padres, Royals and Orioles.
