The story on this card
Capra won his first major league start, over San Diego on April 25, 1972, but was back in the minors by the All-Star break. He finished 3-2 with a 4.58 ERA in 14 games, six of them starts. His 1972 Topps #141, from the second print series, is a Mets Rookie Stars card shared with Leroy Stanton and Jon Matlack. It is the rookie card for Capra and Stanton. Buzz Capra pitched for the Mets and Braves from 1971 to 1977. In 1974 he led the majors with a 2.28 ERA for Atlanta, made the All-Star team, and went 16-8 before arm trouble cut short his career.
Stanton started the Angels' opener in right field, then went 4-for-27 and sat for 13 games before manager Del Rice put him back in on May 14 against the Yankees. He hit his first two big-league home runs that day and kept the job, including a 19-game run from May 21 to June 9 at .380 with five homers. He finished at .251 with 12 home runs and 39 RBIs. The second-series #141 Mets Rookie Stars card, a rookie card for him and Buzz Capra, also lists Jon Matlack. Outfielder for the Mets, Angels and Mariners from 1970 to 1978, packaged with Nolan Ryan in the 1971 Jim Fregosi trade, then California's right fielder and the Mariners' home run leader in their first season.
Matlack earned his first win on April 23, four scoreless innings of relief against the Cubs, then opened with six straight wins and a 1.95 ERA through May. He finished 15-10 with the best ERA on the Mets, 2.32, and on September 30 he gave up Roberto Clemente's 3,000th and final hit. The #141 card, from the second series, is a Rookie Stars card shared with Buzz Capra and Leroy Stanton. Jon Matlack was a left-handed starter for the Mets and Rangers from 1971 to 1983, the 1972 National League Rookie of the Year and a three-time All-Star who shared the 1975 All-Star Game MVP award.
