1972 Topps #105 Gary Gentry

About Gary Gentry
Gentry went 7-10 with a 4.01 ERA in 1972, the worst ERA of his Mets career, and general manager Bob Scheffing called him his biggest disappointment of the season. On November 1 the Mets sent him and Danny Frisella to the Braves for Felix Millan and George Stone. Topps issued him as #105 in its first series, with the Mets.
Gary Gentry was a right-handed pitcher born October 6, 1946, in Phoenix, Arizona. A second baseman at Camelback High School, he did not pitch until Phoenix Junior College, which he led to a national junior college championship before moving on to Arizona State. There he went 17-1 as a junior with 229 strikeouts in 174 innings. He threw a 14-inning, 15-strikeout College World Series semifinal against Stanford and scored the winning run himself, and he was named All-American and National College Player of the Year as Arizona State took the 1967 title. Houston, Baltimore and San Francisco all drafted him without signing him; the New York Mets landed him four days after that championship. Over seven seasons with the Mets and Braves he made 138 starts and went 46-49 with a 3.56 ERA. He struck out 615 batters, with 25 complete games and eight shutouts. Arm injuries ended his career in 1975, and he went home to Phoenix and into real estate.
