1972 Topps #104 Toby Harrah

About Toby Harrah
Harrah arrived in the first series of 1972 as the Rangers' shortstop on card #104, a rookie card, after hitting .230 in 127 games for the 1971 Senators. Washington had already moved to Arlington, so the card carries the new Texas name. Ted Williams was his manager in both cities, and Harrah credited him with making him a better hitter.
Toby Harrah was an infielder who played shortstop, third base and later second base from 1969 to 1986, mostly for the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers franchise and the Cleveland Indians, with a season for the Yankees in 1984. He hit 195 home runs and stole 238 bases. He drew 1,153 walks against 868 strikeouts and led the American League with 109 walks in 1977. He made four All-Star teams (1972, 1975, 1976 and 1982) and hit a career-best .304 in 1982. He was the last batter in Senators history, in the final game on September 30, 1971, and became the last active player from that club. He hit the first of the three grand slams in the 13-11 Rangers win at Baltimore on August 6, 1986. He was named to the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame in 2009. As a coach he was interim Rangers manager in 1992, going 32-44, and later worked as a Tigers hitting coach.
