1972 Topps #191 Jeff Burroughs

About Jeff Burroughs
Burroughs hit .232 with five home runs and 25 RBI for the Senators in 1971 after returning from Denver in July. His first major-league homer, on August 2, was a pinch-hit three-run shot off Ron Perranoski. The #191 rookie card, from the second series of 1972 Topps, shows him with the Texas Rangers.
Jeff Burroughs was a right-handed power-hitting outfielder who played 16 seasons, 1970 to 1985, for the Senators, Rangers, Braves, Mariners, Athletics and Blue Jays. The Senators made him the first overall pick of the 1969 draft out of Long Beach's Woodrow Wilson High School. He won the 1974 American League MVP award with Texas, leading the league with 118 RBI while batting .301 with 25 home runs, and was the first Ranger to win it. Ted Williams called him the greatest young hitter he had seen. He was an All-Star in 1974 and 1978. He finished with a .261 average, 240 home runs and 882 RBI, and in 1985 made his only postseason appearance, one pinch-hit at-bat in the ALCS for Toronto. His son Sean Burroughs also reached the majors, and Jeff later coached Long Beach to Little League World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.
