About this card

Cards #85-96 are the twelve League Leaders cards: the 1971 leaders in batting, runs batted in, home runs, earned run average, pitching and strikeouts, one card per league in each category with the National League card first, and three or four players on each card (#93 names four).

The story on this card

Joe Torre of the St. Louis Cardinals drove in 137 runs in 1971, the most in the National League, along with 24 home runs and a .363 average. Willie Stargell of the Pittsburgh Pirates followed with a career-high 125 RBI and led the majors with 48 home runs, ahead of Hank Aaron's 47. Aaron of the Atlanta Braves drove in 118. Torre took the MVP award that year, with Stargell second in the voting. Topps gave the RBI race #87 in the first series of the 1972 set, part of the League Leaders subset (#85-96), with the three men printed as Cardinals, Pirates and Braves.

Joe Torre was a nine-time All-Star catcher and infielder who won the 1971 National League MVP award with St. Louis, then managed the Yankees to four World Series titles. He entered the Hall of Fame in 2014. Willie Stargell was Pittsburgh's power-hitting left fielder and first baseman, a seven-time All-Star known as "Pops" who won two World Series with the Pirates and, at age 39, took the 1979 National League MVP, NLCS MVP and World Series MVP awards. Hank Aaron spent 23 major-league seasons with the Braves and Brewers. The right fielder passed Babe Ruth's career home run record in 1974 and finished with 755 home runs and 3,771 hits.
