1972 Topps #13 Joe Grzenda

About Joe Grzenda
Grzenda spent his final major league season, 1972, in the St. Louis bullpen. He went 1-0 with a 5.66 ERA over 30 games. He worked 35 innings, struck out 15 and made his last appearance on September 23. His 1972 Topps card, #13 in the first series, lists him with the Cardinals.
Joe Grzenda was a left-handed sidearm relief pitcher from Scranton, Pennsylvania, who spent eight major league seasons between 1961 and 1972 with the Tigers, Athletics, Mets, Twins, Senators and Cardinals. Standing 6-foot-2 and pitching almost exclusively out of the bullpen, he appeared in 219 games and finished 14-13 with a 4.00 ERA. His best year came in 1971 for Washington, when he went 5-2 with a 1.92 ERA. He pitched briefly for Minnesota in the 1969 ALCS. On September 30, 1971, pitching for the Washington Senators in their final home game before the move to Texas, he had recorded two outs in the ninth inning when fans stormed the RFK Stadium field, forcing a forfeit. Thirty-four years later he returned to RFK and handed President George W. Bush the ceremonial first-pitch ball when baseball returned to Washington. He died in 2019.
