About this card

This is one of the 29 Rookie Stars cards in the 1972 Topps set, each carrying two or three players under a club title (#724, #741 and #761 are league-wide), and all 29 are rookie cards.

The story on this card

Koegel played 41 games for the Phillies in 1972, hitting .143 in 49 at-bats, and his last game came on October 2. Mike Anderson and Wayne Twitchell share his 1972 Topps card, #14, a first-series Rookie Stars issue, and all three players are printed with the Philadelphia Phillies. Pete Koegel, a 6-foot-6 right-handed hitting catcher, first baseman and outfielder, played 62 games for the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies between 1970 and 1972, the last of them in Philadelphia.

A Clay Carroll pitch hit Anderson in the head during spring training in 1972 and he was carried off the field on a stretcher, but he recovered in time to open the season as the Phillies' everyday right fielder. He hit .194 through May and went down to Triple-A Eugene. His 1972 Topps #14 is a three-man Rookie Stars card with Pete Koegel and Wayne Twitchell, all printed with the Phillies, and it is Anderson's rookie card. Mike Anderson was the sixth overall pick of the 1969 draft, an outfielder from Timmonsville, South Carolina, who played for the Phillies, Cardinals and Orioles from 1971 to 1979. He hit .246 with 28 home runs in 721 major league games.

Twitchell stayed with the 1972 Phillies, who lost 97 games, and pitched in 49 games with 15 starts for a 5-9 record and a 4.06 ERA. On June 10 he gave up Hank Aaron's grand slam, and on August 19 he shut out Houston 4-0 with eight strikeouts and no walks. Card #14 is a Rookie Stars card in the first series, shared with Pete Koegel and Mike Anderson. Wayne Twitchell, a 6-foot-6 right-hander drafted third overall in 1966, pitched for five clubs from 1970 to 1979. His 1973 season with the Phillies produced a 2.50 ERA and an All-Star selection before a knee injury ended it.
