About this card

Every club has a manager card of its own this year, separate from the 24 team cards, and every one of the 24 manager cards pictures the manager alone. Nine of them are Hall of Famers, and #510 Ted Williams manages the Texas Rangers in their first season after the move from Washington.

About Frank Lucchesi

Philadelphia sat in first place 20 games into 1972, then lost 19 of 20 beginning May 16. On July 9, with the club 26-50, new general manager Paul Owens fired Lucchesi and took over as manager himself. Fans erupted angrily at the firing, and the mayor offered him a job. He still reached out to the mother of a 6-year-old recovering from open-heart surgery to say the boy's invitation to a game stood. His #188 manager card shows him with the Phillies.

Frank Lucchesi spent four decades as a manager, nearly all of it in the minors. A San Francisco native, he played outfield in the lower minors from 1945 to 1957, batting .276 with 56 home runs in 1,149 games, and began managing in 1951 as player-manager of the Medford Rogues of the Class D Far West League. He joined the Phillies' system in 1956, won six pennants in 13 seasons and worked with Chris Short, Dick Allen, Fergie Jenkins and Larry Bowa on their way up. In the majors he managed the Phillies from 1970 to 1972, the Texas Rangers from 1975 to 1977 and the Cubs on an interim basis in 1987, finishing 316-399 overall. In spring training 1977 Rangers second baseman Lenny Randle struck him, leaving him with a concussion and a broken jaw; the Rangers fired him on June 21 at 31-31. In 1963, ejected while managing Triple-A Arkansas, he climbed a light tower to watch and, afraid of heights, was too scared to move when the umpire ordered him down. He died in Colleyville, Texas, on June 8, 2019.
