About Roger Freed

Freed's 1972 was a step back from the 1971 job: he played 73 games and started 27 in right field, sharing the position with Oscar Gamble, Tom Hutton and Mike Anderson. He hit .225 with 6 home runs and 18 RBI for a Phillies team that finished 59-97. On December 1 he and Gamble went to Cleveland for Del Unser and Terry Wedgewood. His card that year is #69, a first-series issue showing him with Philadelphia.

Roger Freed was an outfielder and first baseman who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors, 1970 to 1979, with Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Montreal and St. Louis. He won The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year award twice, the only man to do so, the second time at Denver in 1976 with 42 home runs. In between he played the 1975 season for Monterrey in the Mexican League. He found his role as a Cardinals pinch hitter and was released in spring training of 1980. He finished with 22 home runs and a .245 average, and died in Chino, California, in January 1996 at age 49.
