1972 Topps #357 Woodie Fryman

About Woodie Fryman
Topps listed Fryman with the Phillies on #357, a third-series card, but he finished 1972 in a Tigers uniform. He opened the season with two shutouts in his first six starts, then lost seven straight decisions. He stood 4-10 with a 4.36 ERA for a 34-61 club. In Detroit he went 10-3 with a 2.06 ERA down the stretch, then lost both of his ALCS decisions to Oakland.
Woodie Fryman was a left-handed pitcher from Ewing, Kentucky, who grew up working his family's farm and turned down early bonus offers before signing with the Pirates in 1965. He debuted in 1966 and worked as both starter and reliever across 18 major league seasons for six clubs. An arthritic elbow diagnosed during his Philadelphia years never fully left him, yet he kept pitching into his forties, converting to a full-time reliever with Montreal late in his run. He made two All-Star teams and helped Detroit reach the 1972 ALCS and Montreal the 1981 NLCS. He finished with 141 wins, 58 saves and a 3.77 ERA. Gene Mauch said nobody in the business could throw any better, and teammate Larry Bowa once said hitting him was like trying to eat soup with a fork. He retired to his Kentucky farm and was later honored by the Montreal Expos Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
