1972 Topps #283 Darrell Brandon

About Darrell Brandon
After 1970 at Triple-A Tucson in the White Sox system, Brandon came back to the majors with Philadelphia and worked 83 innings in 52 relief appearances in 1971, finishing 6-6 with a 3.90 ERA and four saves. Card #283, in the third series, shows him with the Phillies.
Darrell G. Brandon, a right-handed pitcher from Nacogdoches, Texas, reached the major leagues in 1966 after eight seasons working his way up through four organizations. Signed originally as an outfielder, he converted to pitching in the low minors and got the nickname "Bucky" from a glove with that name carved into it, which he bought from a class D teammate. Brandon debuted with the Boston Red Sox in 1966 and turned in his best season as a rookie, then remained with Boston through the pennant-winning 1967 season before a shoulder injury that September ended his year and kept him out of the World Series. Arm trouble limited him in 1968, and he moved on to the Seattle Pilots and then the Minnesota Twins. He pitched mostly out of the bullpen for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1971 to 1973, closing out a seven-year career split between the American and National Leagues. After retiring he ran a pitching school in New Jersey and later taught young pitchers in Massachusetts for more than two decades.
