About Gene Clines
Clines set career highs in 1972 with a .334 average, 15 doubles and 6 triples. He had 104 hits in 107 games and stole 12 bases. Pittsburgh lost the NLCS to Cincinnati in five games, and he had two at-bats in it without a hit. The Pirates are shown on his 1972 Topps #152, a print series 2 card.
Gene Clines was a right-handed outfielder with speed and a good glove who spent ten seasons in the majors, 1970 through 1979, with the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs. Pittsburgh took him in the sixth round of the 1966 draft, and he arrived as a reserve who hit .405 in 31 games in 1970. He belonged to the Pirates teams that won four National League East titles in five years and the 1971 World Series. Pittsburgh traded him to the Mets for Duffy Dyer in October 1974; the Mets sent him to Texas for Joe Lovitto, and the Rangers passed him to the Cubs as the player to be named later in the Darold Knowles deal. He finished with a .277 average, 5 home runs and 71 stolen bases in 870 games. A coaching career followed, with the Cubs, Astros, Mariners, Brewers and Giants, where he was hitting coach from 1997, and later the Dodgers as an instructor and adviser. He died in Bradenton, Florida, on January 27, 2022.
