About this card
Cards #221 and #222 cover the 1971 league playoffs - "Bucs Champs!" for the Pittsburgh Pirates (#221) and "Orioles Champs!" for the Baltimore Orioles (#222) - ahead of the eight World Series cards, #223-230.
The story on this card
Bob Robertson hit three home runs in Game 2 on October 3, 1971 at Candlestick Park, a 9-4 Pirates win that tied the N.L. Championship Series with the San Francisco Giants at one game each. Pittsburgh won it three games to one for its first pennant in 11 years. Robertson was the first player to hit three in a playoff game; he added a fourth of the series in Game 3. Richie Hebner won that game 2-1 with an eighth-inning homer off Juan Marichal. In Game 4, Al Oliver's three-run homer off Jerry Johnson made it 9-5, and Bruce Kison and Dave Giusti pitched the last seven innings of shutout ball. Card #221 in the 1972 Topps Playoffs subset, a series 2 card, covers the Pittsburgh side.
