About Jim Nettles
Nettles spent all of 1972 with the Twins, playing 102 games, 78 of them in the outfield and one at first base. He hit .204 with four home runs and 15 RBI. His 1972 Topps card, #131, falls in the first series and shows him with Minnesota.
Jim Nettles was a left-handed-hitting outfielder from San Diego who played parts of six major league seasons between 1970 and 1981 for the Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics. He hit .220 with 16 home runs in 240 games. The younger brother of Graig Nettles, he played at San Diego State and was a fourth-round pick of the Twins in 1968. Minnesota used him as a reserve outfielder and pinch hitter, and the Twins traded him to Detroit for Paul Jata after 1973. He played for the Nankai Hawks in Japan in 1975, then spent 1977 to 1980 in the Pirates, Royals and Yankees systems. After his playing days he managed in the minors from 1983 to 1996, including the Madison Muskies from 1985 to 1989, and later coached Spokane. He is the father-in-law of Mike Sweeney.
