About George Mitterwald In Action

Mitterwald caught 120 of his 125 games for the 1971 Twins. He hit .250 with 13 home runs and 44 RBI. Topps gave him two cards in the third series: #301, his regular issue, and #302, from the In Action subset, both listing Minnesota. George Eugene Mitterwald was a catcher who played 11 major league seasons for the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs. Born June 7, 1945, in Berkeley, California, he stood 6 feet 2 inches and batted and threw right-handed. He debuted with the Twins in September 1966 and caught for manager Billy Martin in 1969, reaching the postseason with Minnesota in both 1969 and 1970. The Twins traded him to the Chicago Cubs for Randy Hundley at the 1973 Winter Meetings, and he closed out his major league career with the Cubs through 1977, also seeing time at first base. Over 887 career games he batted .236 with 76 home runs and 301 RBI. After retiring as a player he moved into coaching and managing, including a bullpen coaching stint under Billy Martin.
