1972 Topps #290 Sonny Siebert

About Sonny Siebert
Siebert stood 9-5 with a 2.79 ERA at the 1972 All-Star break when he slipped on rocks while vacationing with his family at the beach and badly sprained his right ankle. He finished 12-12 with a 3.80 ERA in 196 1/3 innings. His #290 in the third series of the 1972 Topps set pictures him with Boston.
Wilfred Charles "Sonny" Siebert was a right-handed pitcher born January 14, 1937, in St. Mary, Missouri. A two-sport star at Missouri, he played basketball for three years and helped the Tigers reach the College World Series final in his one season on the baseball team. The Cleveland Indians signed him as an outfielder in 1958, and a minor-league pitching coach later convinced him to switch to the mound. He debuted for Cleveland in 1964 and threw a no-hitter against the Washington Senators on June 10, 1966. He was selected to two All-Star teams, in 1966 and 1971. Traded to Boston in 1969, he went 16-10 for the Red Sox in 1971 while also hitting six home runs. He closed his career with St. Louis, San Diego, and Oakland, finishing 140-114 with a 3.21 ERA over 12 seasons, and later spent years as a minor and major league pitching coach. He was inducted into the University of Missouri Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
