The story on this card
Three left-handers share #94, the 1971 American League pitching leaders card. Mickey Lolich of the Detroit Tigers led the league in wins at 25-14, over 376 innings with 29 complete games. Vida Blue of the Oakland Athletics followed at 24-8 with a league-best 1.82 ERA and 8 shutouts, and edged Lolich for the Cy Young Award. Wilbur Wood of the Chicago White Sox won 22 with a 1.91 ERA. He started 42 of his 44 games and threw 334 innings. Topps ran the card in the League Leaders subset (#85-96) of its 1972 first series, with the three men printed in the order Tigers, Athletics, White Sox.
Mickey Lolich pitched 13 seasons for Detroit and won three complete games in the 1968 World Series. His Game 7 victory over Bob Gibson secured the championship and the Series MVP award. Vida Blue was a hard-throwing left-hander who won the 1971 American League Cy Young Award and MVP Award with Oakland, pitched for three straight World Series winners from 1972 to 1974, and finished 209-161 with the Athletics, Giants and Royals. Hoyt Wilhelm helped Wilbur Wood make the knuckleball his primary pitch with the White Sox. Wood set a major league record with 88 pitching appearances in 1968, including 2 starts.
