1972 Topps #83 Dalton Jones

About Dalton Jones
When Al Kaline was slowed by a pulled hamstring in 1971, Jones was batting .375 and hit .500 with a home run in three starts in right field. He held a .300 average into mid-June, finished at .254, and led the Tigers with 13 pinch hits. His #83 card, from the first series, lists Detroit.
Dalton Jones was a left-handed-hitting utility infielder who spent nine major league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers, from 1964 through 1972. A Mississippi native who starred at shortstop in Baton Rouge, he signed with Boston for a $60,000 bonus and worked his way up through the Red Sox system before debuting in 1964. He played second base, third base and first base for Boston across the rest of the decade and was also used as a pinch-hitter. His best season came in 1967, when he hit a career-high .289, led the American League in pinch hits, and started at third base for Boston in the World Series. Traded to Detroit before the 1970 season, he closed out his career there and with Texas in 1972. Over 907 games he batted .235 with 41 home runs and 237 RBI.
