About this card

Cards #85-96 are the twelve League Leaders cards: the 1971 leaders in batting, runs batted in, home runs, earned run average, pitching and strikeouts, one card per league in each category with the National League card first, and three or four players on each card (#93 names four).

The story on this card

Three men were level at 30 home runs on September 23, 1971, and 1972 Topps #90 prints the finish. Bill Melton of the White Sox won the American League title with 33, the first home run crown in White Sox history. He hit two on September 29 and the 33rd off Milwaukee's Bill Parsons on the last day. Norm Cash of the Tigers, who hit two at Cleveland on September 28, and Reggie Jackson of the Athletics each ended at 32. The card sits in the League Leaders run at #85-96 in the first series of 1972 Topps.

Bill Melton - Slugging third baseman who led the American League in home runs in 1971, made that year's All-Star team and set the White Sox single-season home run record the year before. Norm Cash, "Stormin' Norman," held down first base in Detroit for fifteen seasons, won the 1961 American League batting title at .361, made four All-Star teams and helped the Tigers win the 1968 World Series, finishing with 377 home runs. Oakland outfielder Reggie Jackson attended Arizona State on a football scholarship. He played summer baseball for Walter Youse's amateur team in Baltimore before taking over Arizona State's center-field job from Rick Monday.
