1972 Topps #150 Norm Cash

About Norm Cash
Cash is printed on League Leaders card #90, the AL home run entry, between Bill Melton of the White Sox and Reggie Jackson of the Athletics, and his own Tigers card, #150, came in the second series. In 1972 he made the All-Star team again, hitting .259 with 22 home runs and 61 RBI. In the five-game ALCS loss to Oakland he went 4-for-15 with a home run and 2 RBI.
Norman Dalton Cash reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1958 and sat on their 1959 American League pennant winners. Chicago packaged him to Cleveland that December in the Minnie Minoso deal, and the following April, before Cash had played an inning for the Indians, Cleveland sent him on to Detroit for Steve Demeter, who appeared in four games for Cleveland. Cash held down first base for the Tigers for the next fifteen seasons. Ernie Harwell hung the nickname on him, borrowed from a Baltimore man known as Stormin' Norman, after a rare flare of temper. He was a four-time All-Star, the 1961 American League batting champion and a World Series winner in 1968, and he later openly admitted using corked bats, including during 1961. He was the only American Leaguer to hit 20 or more home runs in every season from 1961 through 1969, and he led the league in fielding twice and in assists three times. He finished with 377 home runs, fourth most by an American League left-handed hitter when he retired, behind Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig. Detroit released him in August 1974, and he drowned in 1986 after falling from a dock at Beaver Island, Michigan. Cash was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
