About Bob Barton In Action

In 1971 Barton collected 17 doubles among his 94 hits for San Diego. Behind the plate his 15 errors led National League catchers, and his 67 assists ranked second among them. Topps gave him two cards in the first series of 1972: #39 as a Padre and #40 from the In Action subset, also with San Diego.

Bob Barton was a right-handed catcher who played parts of ten major-league seasons between 1965 and 1974 for the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds. Born July 30, 1941, in Norwood, Ohio, he debuted on September 17, 1965, replacing Jack Hiatt behind the plate in a loss at Milwaukee, and singled for his first hit on September 28 while pinch-hitting for Hall of Famer Warren Spahn. Primarily a backup, he worked behind Tom Haller in San Francisco before moving to the San Diego Padres for the 1970 season. His best year at the plate came in 1971, when he appeared in 121 games as the Padres' regular catcher, batted .250 with five home runs and 23 runs batted in, and led National League catchers in runners caught stealing with 42 and in caught-stealing percentage at 51.2. He got into three games for Cincinnati in 1973 behind Hall of Famer Johnny Bench, closed out his career with San Diego in 1974, and finished at .226 with nine home runs and 66 RBI in 393 games. He died January 15, 2018.
