1972 Topps #274 Al Severinsen

About Al Severinsen
Severinsen skipped the start of spring training in 1972, saying he did not want to play on the West Coast, and opened the season with the Hawaii Islanders of the Pacific Coast League. After going 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA there, he returned to the Padres in late June. He posted a 2.53 ERA in 17 games. His #274 card, printed with the Padres, came in the third series.
Al Severinsen was a 6-foot-3, 220-pound right-handed reliever who pitched 88 major league games for the Baltimore Orioles in 1969 and the San Diego Padres in 1971 and 1972. He went 3-7 with a 3.08 ERA and nine saves. Born in Brooklyn on November 9, 1944, and raised on Long Island, he left Wagner College after signing with the Chicago Cubs as a free agent on September 6, 1963. Baltimore took him in the minor league draft after the 1966 season. He debuted on July 1, 1969, at Yankee Stadium and won his first game on September 10, the Orioles' 98th of a franchise-record 109 victories that year. He was not on the playoff roster, but teammates voted him a 40 percent share of the postseason money, and he named that club his greatest thrill. After baseball he supervised a plant in Nassau County, moved to Mystic, Connecticut, in 2003, and coached players from youth ages through college. He died there on January 27, 2015.
