About Dave Campbell
The 1972 Padres used Campbell in 33 games, 31 of them at third base and one at second, and he hit .240. He had 24 hits in 100 at-bats and drove in three runs. His #384 card, from the third series, pictures him with San Diego.
David Wilson Campbell was born January 14, 1942, in Manistee, Michigan, and grew up in Lansing, where his father coached him in baseball and football. He starred at the University of Michigan, helping the Wolverines win the 1962 College World Series, then signed with the Detroit Tigers in 1964. A right-handed-hitting utility infielder, Campbell reached the majors with Detroit in 1967 and spent parts of eight seasons with the Tigers, San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals, and Houston Astros through 1974, playing first, second, and third base. His only season as a regular came with the 1970 Padres, when he appeared in 154 games. He finished with a .213 career average, 20 home runs and 89 RBI. After retiring as a player, Campbell built a long career in broadcasting, calling games for the Padres and later working national baseball broadcasts for ESPN from 1990 to 2010.
