1972 Topps #7 Enzo Hernandez

About Enzo Hernandez
In 1972 Don Zimmer replaced Preston Gomez as manager on April 27, batted Hernandez eighth and pinch-hit for him about 45 times. He hit .195 in 114 games yet stole 24 bases, bettering his own mark for most steals by a Latin American shortstop in the National League. Card #7, from the first series, lists him with the Padres.
Enzo Hernandez was a Venezuelan shortstop whose reputation rested on his glove and his legs. Born near Valle de Guanape in Anzoategui, he signed at 17 with Houston and La Guaira, was sent to Baltimore in a December 1968 trade. He reached the majors with the San Diego Padres after a six-player deal in December 1970. He was San Diego's regular shortstop for most of 1971 through 1976, stole 20 or more bases four times, and posted an 89 percent success rate as a base stealer in 1972. His idol and mentor was Luis Aparicio, who managed him in winter ball with La Guaira, and he wore number 11 in tribute. He had back surgery in 1977, and the Padres released him after seven games. The Dodgers used him in four games in 1978, his last in the majors. He finished with a .224 average, 2 home runs and 129 stolen bases, and played winter ball in Venezuela through 1979. He died in El Tigre in January 2013.
