1972 Topps #689 Eddie Fisher

About Eddie Fisher
The Angels had acquired Fisher from Cleveland in October 1968, and over nearly four seasons with them he pitched in 219 games, 212 of them in relief. His #689 card, in the sixth and final series, lists California. On August 17, 1972, the Angels sent him back to the White Sox for Bruce Miller and Bruce Kimm.
Eddie Gene Fisher (1936-2025) was a right-handed knuckleball pitcher, born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in southwestern Oklahoma, where he pitched Friendship High School to a 1954 state championship before starring at the University of Oklahoma. He signed with the San Francisco Giants and reached the majors on June 22, 1959. Across fifteen big-league seasons he worked for the Giants, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. After Chicago acquired the great knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm in January 1963, Fisher came under his tutelage, and manager Al Lopez reckoned that by 1965 his pupil was throwing the pitch about 85 percent of the time. Fisher made the American League All-Star team in 1965 and won a World Series ring with the 1966 Orioles without appearing in the Series. He finished in 1973 with an 85-70 record, 81 saves and a 3.41 ERA. He appeared in 690 games, and at retirement he was the American League's all-time leader in relief appearances. He was inducted into the University of Oklahoma Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
