1972 Topps #728 Gail Hopkins

About Gail Hopkins
Hopkins appeared in 53 games for Kansas City in 1972, with 71 at-bats, a .211 average and no home runs, and played first base in 13 of them. Card #728 is in the sixth series and carries the Royals team name.
Gail Hopkins was a left-handed-hitting first baseman and catcher who played 514 major league games from 1968 to 1974 for the White Sox, Royals and Dodgers. A catcher at Pepperdine, he was an All-American in 1963 and became the first Pepperdine baseball player to reach the majors. He played for the Edmonton Oilers of the Western Canadian Baseball League in 1964 before signing with Chicago. He was known as a hard man to strike out, with one of the lowest strikeout-to-at-bat ratios of his time. After the majors he played in Japan from 1975 to 1977 for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp and Nankai Hawks, setting a Carp home run record with 33 in 1975 and batting .329 in 1976, when he played in the Japanese All-Star game. He then left baseball for medicine, earned an M.D. at Rush Medical College and practiced orthopedic surgery in California, Illinois and West Virginia.
