1972 Topps #616 Joe Ferguson

About Joe Ferguson
Card #616, a rookie card from the fifth series of the 1972 Topps set, shows Ferguson as a Dodger. It follows 1971, when he caught 35 of his 36 games and hit .216 with 2 home runs and 7 RBI, a year after a five-game debut that began September 12, 1970.
Joe Ferguson was a catcher and right fielder who spent most of a 14-season career, 1970 to 1983, with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and also played in St. Louis, Houston and California. He played basketball as well as baseball at the University of the Pacific and reached the majors with the Dodgers in 1970. He became their everyday catcher in 1973, hitting 25 home runs with 88 RBI and committing only three errors, a record for catchers, while leading National League catchers in fielding percentage and double plays. When Steve Yeager became a regular behind the plate, Ferguson also played right field and became known for one of the strongest outfield arms in the majors. In the 1974 World Series he threw out Sal Bando at the plate from right-center and homered off Vida Blue in Game Two, the Dodgers' only win. He caught 122 games for Houston in 1977, returned to Los Angeles in 1978 and reached another World Series. He finished with 122 home runs and 445 RBI in 1013 games. He later coached for Texas and the Dodgers and managed in the minors and the Atlantic League.
