1972 Topps #468 Richie Scheinblum

About Richie Scheinblum
Scheinblum led the American Association in 1971 with a .490 on-base percentage and a .725 slugging average for the Denver Bears. He also led it with 10 triples and tied for the lead with 31 doubles. Bob Lemon's Royals finished 1972 at 76-78, fourth in the American League West and 16 1/2 games behind Oakland, with Scheinblum as the starting right fielder. His #468, a fourth-series card, lists him with the Royals.
Richie Scheinblum was a switch-hitting outfielder who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors between 1965 and 1974, playing for the Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. A C.W. Post College graduate, he broke in with Cleveland as a September call-up in 1965 and spent several seasons shuttling between the Indians and their Portland farm club before piecing together a full-time role. His best year came in 1972 with Kansas City, where he hit .300, made the American League All-Star team, and was named the Royals' Player of the Month in August. That September he wore a black armband to honor the Israeli athletes killed at the Munich Olympics. He finished his career with a .263 average, 13 home runs and 127 RBI over 462 games, and later played two seasons in Japan for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. He was one of a small handful of Jewish players in the majors during his era.
