The story on this card
Boston finished 1972 at 85-70, second in the American League East, half a game behind Detroit. The strike-shortened schedule left Boston with 155 games to Detroit's 156, and the Tigers' 86-70 record won the division by that half game. Boston led going into the closing three-game series at Tiger Stadium, and Detroit won two of the three. In the opener, Luis Aparicio fell rounding third base with Carl Yastrzemski bearing down on the bag, and Yastrzemski was tagged out in a 4-1 Detroit win. Carlton Fisk, the American League Rookie of the Year, caught for Eddie Kasko's club. After the 1971 season Boston sent George Scott and Jim Lonborg to Milwaukee in a deal that brought Marty Pattin, Lew Krausse and Tommy Harper; Pattin went 17-13. Card #596 is the Red Sox team card, a high number from print series 5.
