1973 Topps #597 Mickey Rivers

About Mickey Rivers
Rivers played 30 games in 1973, 29 of them in the outfield, and collected 45 hits in 129 at-bats for a .349 average. His #597 is a high number from the fifth series, and it lists him with the California Angels.
Mickey Rivers was a left-handed center fielder and leadoff hitter who played 15 seasons, 1970 to 1984, for the Angels, Yankees and Rangers. A Miami native who attended Miami Dade Community College, he was known as Mick the Quick and was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves. He retired with a .295 average, 1,660 hits and 267 steals. When Reggie Jackson told a reporter he had an IQ of 160, Rivers answered, "Out of what, a thousand?" His final major league game came on September 30, 1984, when the Rangers lost 1-0 to Mike Witt's perfect game for the Angels. After baseball he trained racehorses in his native Florida. In 2007 he was honored with teammates from the 1977 champions at the Yankees' Old Timers Game.
