About Leroy Stanton

Stanton had one home run through the first 55 games under manager Bobby Winkles, then took hitting advice from Frank Robinson and Don Drysdale. On July 10 at Baltimore he hit three home runs against the Orioles, the last in the 10th inning off Eddie Watt, and stole a base in a 10-8 Angels win. Only one other AL player had done both in a game, Carl Reynolds in 1930. He ended at .235 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs. His first-series Angels card is #18.

Leroy Stanton was a right-handed outfielder who played nine seasons for the Mets, Angels and Mariners and was the player the Angels insisted on in the December 1971 trade that sent Nolan Ryan to California for Jim Fregosi. The seventh child of a Latta, South Carolina tenant farmer, he signed with Mets scout Julian Morgan in 1964, was beaned in his first pro season and lost two years to Army service in Germany. He was the Angels' regular right fielder from 1972 to 1975, and in 1975 he led the majors with 16 outfield assists and shared the club's MVP award with Frank Tanana. Seattle took him in the 1976 expansion draft, and he hit a career-high 27 home runs for the first Mariners team. He finished with 77 home runs and an identical .244 average and .388 slugging mark against lefties and righties, at home and on the road. He later coached in the Blue Jays system and ran his own trucking company, Stanton Trucking, until 2015.
