1973 Topps #154 Jeff Torborg

About Jeff Torborg
Torborg collected 32 hits and drove in 8 runs for the Angels in 1972. His 1973 Topps #154, in the second series, listed him with California. Bone chips in his right elbow caused pain early in 1973. He finished that season batting .220 with 18 RBI in 102 games.
Jeff Torborg was a defensive catcher who could handle a pitching staff, playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels from 1964 to 1973. A Rutgers All-American who hit .537 in his final college season, he signed with the Dodgers in 1963 and spent most of his career as a backup, not becoming a starter until 1973, his last season. Torborg caught three no-hitters for three different pitchers: Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game, Bill Singer's 1970 no-hitter and the first of Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters in 1973. That made him one of a handful of catchers to catch a no-hitter in each league. He finished with a .214 average, 8 home runs and 101 RBI. After his playing days Torborg became a manager, coach and broadcaster. He led the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins, and won American League Manager of the Year with the White Sox in 1990.
