1973 Topps #392 Dick Drago

About Dick Drago
Drago went 12-14 with a 4.23 ERA in his fifth and last season with the Royals, the first time his ERA topped 4.00 in the majors. Drago later said manager Jack McKeon quit on him that year; McKeon has denied it, but it soon became clear the Royals were ready to deal him in the offseason. His 1973 Topps card is #392, a third-series number, with Kansas City.
Richard Anthony Drago, born June 25, 1945 in Toledo, Ohio, pitched thirteen big league seasons from 1969 to 1981, most of them for the Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox, with stops in California, Baltimore, and Seattle. A Detroit Tigers farmhand, he was left unprotected and taken by the expansion Royals, where he averaged 32 starts and well over 200 innings a season and peaked in 1971 with a 17-11 record and a 2.98 ERA. Traded to Boston for Marty Pattin after the 1973 season, he was converted into a reliever and pitched in both the ALCS and the World Series against Cincinnati during the Red Sox's 1975 pennant run. He finished his career with 108 wins, 58 saves, and a 3.62 ERA over 519 appearances. He was known as a bench jockey who rode opposing players from the dugout, and off the field he made many visits to children in hospitals.
