About Jon Matlack

The Rookie Cup trophy on the front of #55 recognizes his 1972 season. Matlack's 1973 included a skull fracture from a Marty Perez line drive on May 8 and a return 11 days later. He went 14-16 with 205 strikeouts, then held Cincinnati to two hits in NLCS Game 2 and won World Series Game 4.

Jon Matlack was a left-handed starter who pitched 13 seasons, 1971 to 1983, for the Mets and the Rangers. New York took him fourth overall in the 1967 draft out of a Pennsylvania high school, and he won 14 games for Tidewater in 1969 as the Tides took the International League title. He won the 1972 National League Rookie of the Year award, and along with Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman he formed the rotation core of the 1973 pennant winners. He was an All-Star in 1974, 1975 and 1976, and he ranks among the top ten Mets pitchers in wins, complete games, ERA, strikeouts and innings. He spent his last six seasons with Texas, finishing 125-126 with a 3.18 ERA and 1,516 strikeouts. He later worked as a pitching coach for Detroit from 1996 and was named to the Mets Hall of Fame in 2020.
