The story on this card

The 1972 Mets opened with a new manager after Gil Hodges died of a heart attack on April 2; Yogi Berra was introduced as his successor on April 6. On May 11 the club acquired Willie Mays from the San Francisco Giants, and by May 21 New York stood 25-7, six games ahead of Pittsburgh. Injuries to Rusty Staub, Bud Harrelson, Jerry Grote and Cleon Jones hurt the club, and the Mets finished 83-73, third in the National League East, 13 1/2 games behind the Pirates. They scored 528 runs and allowed 578. Tom Seaver went 21-12, and Jon Matlack won Rookie of the Year honors at 15-10. Tug McGraw saved 27 games with a 1.70 ERA. The team card is #389 in the third series of the 1973 Topps set.
