1973 Topps #390 Mickey Lolich

About Mickey Lolich
Third-series card #390 carried Lolich with Detroit in 1973 after he placed third in the 1972 American League Cy Young voting. He had completed 23 games and struck out 250 batters that season. In Game 4 of the 1972 ALCS, he held Oakland to 1 run over 9 innings; Detroit won in the tenth with John Hiller pitching.
Mickey Lolich was born right-handed in Portland, Oregon, but exercises to strengthen an injured left arm after a childhood accident helped turn him into a left-handed pitcher. He signed with Detroit in 1958 and spent 13 of his 16 major league seasons with the Tigers. His route to their rotation included refusing a minor-league demotion and returning home, where a season with the Portland Beavers and advice from pitching coach Gerry Staley helped him gain control. Lolich won three complete games in the 1968 World Series, beating Bob Gibson in Game 7 on two days of rest to earn the Series MVP award. Away from the mound, he rode a motorcycle to Tiger Stadium and organized visits to Cape Kennedy for teammates during spring training. He finished his career with 217 victories and 2,832 strikeouts and entered the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1982.
