1973 Topps #369 Lerrin LaGrow

About Lerrin LaGrow
Card #369, from the third series, follows a 1972 in which LaGrow posted a 1.32 ERA and two saves in 16 games and did not allow a run in his last nine appearances, 15 innings. In 1973 he made Detroit's Opening Day roster and earned the club's first two saves, then collided with John Hiller in batting practice, leaving him on the disabled list with a hairline fracture of his pitching wrist. He won his first big-league game on September 5 in Cleveland, finishing 1-5 with a 4.33 ERA.
Lerrin LaGrow was a 6-foot-5 right-hander who pitched in the majors from 1970 to 1980 for the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. A Phoenix native, he won 14 games for Arizona State's 1969 College World Series champions and was a sixth-round Tigers pick that June. He was the Southern League's Player of the Year in 1970. Detroit made him a starter in 1974 and 1975, and after that he worked almost entirely out of the bullpen, becoming the White Sox closer in 1977 with 25 saves, third best in the American League. He was also the target of the Bert Campaneris bat throw in the 1972 ALCS. He finished 34-55 with a 4.11 ERA, 309 games and 54 saves.
