About Tony Taylor
Taylor drove in 20 runs and scored 33 for Detroit in 1972. His 1973 Topps #29, a first-series card, still lists the Tigers. In 1973 he batted .229 with 5 home runs and 24 RBI for Detroit. He stole 9 bases in 84 games.
Tony Taylor played nineteen major league seasons for the Cubs, Phillies and Tigers, finishing with 2,007 hits, 234 stolen bases and a .261 average. The Cuban infielder began his professional career with Texas City in 1954. Chicago traded him and Cal Neeman to Philadelphia in May 1960 for Don Cardwell and Ed Bouchee; that summer Taylor played in both National League All-Star Games. He returned to Philadelphia for his final three seasons after his time in Detroit. After retiring as a player, he coached for the Phillies and worked in the Giants and Marlins organizations. He entered the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2002.
