1973 Topps #146 Woodie Fryman

About Woodie Fryman
Shoulder stiffness set in during the spring of 1973, and Fryman sustained an arm injury in his second start that affected him afterward; he finished 6-13 with a 5.36 ERA. His 1973 Topps card, #146, came in the second series with the Tigers. In 1972 his .769 winning percentage over 113 2/3 American League innings was the league's best, though Catfish Hunter's .750 was the official league-leading mark. His 154 ERA+ that year is one of the highest in Detroit franchise history.
Woodie Fryman was a left-handed pitcher from Ewing, Kentucky, who grew up working his family's farm and turned down early bonus offers before signing with the Pirates in 1965. He debuted in 1966 and worked as both starter and reliever across 18 major league seasons for six clubs. An arthritic elbow diagnosed during his Philadelphia years never fully left him, yet he kept pitching into his forties, converting to a full-time reliever with Montreal late in his run. He made two All-Star teams and helped Detroit reach the 1972 ALCS and Montreal the 1981 NLCS. He finished with 141 wins, 58 saves and a 3.77 ERA. Gene Mauch said nobody in the business could throw any better, and teammate Larry Bowa once said hitting him was like trying to eat soup with a fork. He retired to his Kentucky farm and was later honored by the Montreal Expos Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
