1973 Topps #145 Bobby Bonds

About Bobby Bonds
Bonds idolized Willie Mays, who became the unofficial godfather of his son Barry. Of Mays's May 1972 trade to the Mets, Bonds said, "When Willie left, half of me left. I just went through the motions after that." He still hit 26 home runs, ninth in the National League, and drove in 80 runs. Card #145 is from the second series of the 1973 Topps set and lists him with the Giants.
Bobby Bonds was a right fielder who combined power and speed across 14 major league seasons from 1968 to 1981, the first seven with the San Francisco Giants. Called up on June 25, 1968, he hit a grand slam in his third at-bat of his first game, the first player of the modern era to hit a slam in his debut. Bonds became the first player with more than two 30-homer, 30-steal seasons, finishing with a record five, and the second after Willie Mays to reach 300 home runs and 300 stolen bases. A three-time All-Star (1971, 1973, 1975) and three-time Gold Glove winner (1971, 1973, 1974), he was the All-Star Game MVP and The Sporting News NL Player of the Year in 1973. That year he hit a career-high 39 homers and stole 43 bases. He also struck out often, twice setting the single-season strikeout record. After the 1974 season the Giants traded him to the Yankees for Bobby Murcer, and he played for seven more clubs by 1981, finishing with 332 home runs and 461 steals. He was the Indians' hitting instructor from 1984 to 1987 and a Giants coach again in 1993. Bonds is the father of Barry Bonds, and together they hold the father-son records for combined home runs, RBIs and stolen bases.
