1973 Topps #144 Marty Perez

About Marty Perez
Card #144, in the second series, lists Perez with the Braves. In spring 1973 rookie Leo Foster was named the starting shortstop but was concussed in a collision with Darrell Evans before Opening Day, and Perez kept the job. He played 139 games at short. Hall of Fame shortstop Luke Appling counseled him to hit to the opposite field, and he hit .250 with eight home runs and 57 RBI.
Marty Perez was a glove-first shortstop and second baseman who played 10 major league seasons, 1969 to 1978, for the California Angels, Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics. Born in Visalia, California, he was quarterback and punter at Redwood High School and signed with the Angels in June 1964. He led Texas League shortstops in assists and double plays for the 1968 El Paso champions under Chuck Tanner, then led Pacific Coast League shortstops in double plays with 79 for Hawaii in 1969. He was the Braves' starting shortstop from 1971 to 1973 and their second baseman for the next two seasons, and he helped the 1971 Braves set a club record of 180 double plays. His best offensive year was 1973. He finished his career with Oakland and hit .246 with 22 home runs and 241 RBI in 931 games.
