1973 Topps #298 Ron Bryant

About Ron Bryant
Bryant went 24-12 with a 3.53 ERA in 1973, starting 39 of his 41 games. He threw 270 innings and struck out 143. He finished third in the Cy Young voting behind Tom Seaver and Mike Marshall, and his win total was the most by a Giants left-hander since Carl Hubbell's 26 in 1936. During starts he carried in his back pocket as many pieces of bubble gum as the number of wins he was chasing. His card is #298, from the third series.
Ron Bryant was a left-handed pitcher from Redlands, California, who spent nearly his whole career with the San Francisco Giants, 1967 to 1975, and finished 57-56 with a 4.02 ERA over 917 innings. His peak was 1973, when he won 24 games, led the National League and was named The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year and its All-Star left-hander. Giants equipment manager Mike Murphy gave him the nickname Bear, saying Bryant looked like one with his chunky build, his walk and his curly hair. His request to be placed on the voluntary retired list was granted on April 4, 1975, and he cited a wish to spend more time with his wife and two children. The Giants traded his contract to the St. Louis Cardinals on May 9 for Larry Herndon and minor leaguer Tony Gonzales, and the Cardinals released him on July 30 after he rejected a demotion to Tulsa. The Dodgers cut him in spring training 1976, and he stayed in the organization at Albuquerque until his release on July 13. Bryant died in Boise, Idaho, in 2023.
