1973 Topps #299 Ted Ford

About Ted Ford
Jeff Burroughs won the Texas right-field job in spring 1973, so Ford opened at Triple-A Spokane and was hitting .361 after 20 games. On May 10 the Rangers sent him and Dick Bosman back to Cleveland for Steve Dunning. He hit .324 at Oklahoma City and was recalled in September. His last major league game, on September 29, was a 1-for-5 night against Baltimore's Mike Cuellar. His #299 card, from the third series, is issued with the Texas Rangers.
Ted Ford was a right-handed outfielder with a strong throwing arm who played for the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers from 1970 to 1973. A Vineland, New Jersey, native, he was the Indians' first-round pick, 11th overall, in the January 1966 draft. Army service cost him 1968 and 1969, much of it spent as a cook at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He made his debut on April 7, 1970, going 0-for-2 with a walk against Baltimore's Dave McNally, and finished with 240 major league games, a .219 average and 17 home runs. In 1972 in Texas he led the American League with 10 assists from right field. After his major league time ended he played eight seasons in the Mexican League, through 1982, then coached young players in New Jersey and Texas, including at Huston-Tillotson University. He died in Austin on September 15, 2025.
