1973 Topps #321 Rich Hinton

About Rich Hinton
The Rangers bought his contract from the Yankees on September 7, 1972, and he made five relief appearances for them, all in losing efforts. Card #321, from the third series, shows him with Texas, though on March 8, 1973 the Rangers sent him and Vince Colbert to Cleveland for Alex Johnson. He never pitched for the Indians, who released him on April 1, 1974. His 1972 line of 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 12 games was split between New York and Texas.
Rich Hinton was a left-handed pitcher from Tucson who worked parts of six major league seasons between 1971 and 1979, going 9-17 with a 4.87 ERA in 116 games. He starred at the University of Arizona, going 32-8 over three seasons, and was drafted five times in five years before signing with the White Sox in the third round of the 1969 secondary draft. Chicago was the club he kept returning to, in three separate stints. His career ran through the Yankees, Rangers, Reds and Mariners, and in 1977 he pitched in Mexico City, where he went 14-8. His best year came in 1978, when he pitched 29 games for the White Sox with a 4.02 ERA and both of his career complete games. On June 3 of that season he recorded his first major league save. He died in 2025 at 78.
